What Happens If It Rains On Your Wedding Day?
If you are planning an outdoor summer wedding in Alberta, you have probably asked yourself the big question: what happens if it rains on my wedding day? The truth is, sometimes the weather does not follow the script. In fact, the 2025 summer wedding season was one of the rainiest I have ever photographed. But here is the good news: your day can still be just as beautiful, romantic, and memorable.
Why Rain Does Not Ruin a Wedding
Rain might feel like an unwelcomed challenge, but it can also bring an element of charm and intimacy. Overcast skies create soft, flattering light (my personal favourite!) that makes skin tones glow. A little drizzle can add a dreamy, storybook quality to your photos. And honestly, some of the most joyful memories come from couples embracing the moment wholeheartedly.
Backup Options That Save the Day
Here are a few ways I helped couples work around the rain this season:
Backup portrait locations. I always keep an alternate indoor or covered space in mind, whether that is a nearby venue, a studio, or a cozy corner with great light. We need to discuss the option of a studio for your portraits however, as we might need to book well in advance!
Rentable umbrellas. A set of clear umbrellas is both practical and surprisingly stylish. They keep everyone dry while still letting the natural light through and allowing you to see the faces of your guests and selves in the photos.
Mini portrait sessions. Instead of one large portrait block, we broke photos into shorter sessions throughout the day. When the clouds cleared, even briefly, we grabbed those golden, rain-free moments.
By planning ahead and staying flexible, the couples I worked with still ended up with galleries full of variety and personality.
A Real Example From 2025
One of my favourite moments this past summer was a couple who had planned to do their ceremony and all of their portraits outdoors. The rain just would not let up resulting in a muddy and wet venue. Instead of scrapping the plan altogether, we worked with the venue and hosted their ceremony under the cover of a treed space on the property and spread out their portraits into small sessions in different spots throughout the day. We used umbrellas, used both the indoor bridal suite and tent for photos, and waited for short breaks in the weather. We even got an incredible sunset at the end of it all! The result was a gallery that looked intentional, romantic, and completely unique to them.
Embracing Whatever Weather Comes
Your wedding is not defined by the forecast. It is defined by your love, your people, and the story you are creating together. Rain simply becomes part of that story, and with a little planning it can even add something magical.
